Walk into any health food shop or scroll through any wellness website and you will find shelves full of mushroom supplements. Lion's Mane for focus. Reishi for calm. Cordyceps for energy. The category has grown significantly over the past few years, and for good reason. Functional mushrooms contain a remarkable range of bioactive compounds that may support everything from immune function to cognitive performance.
But here is the part that most brands do not talk about. The way those compounds are extracted from the mushroom determines whether you are getting the full benefit or only a fraction of it. And the majority of mushroom supplements on the market today use a single extraction method that captures only half of what the mushroom has to offer.
Why Extraction Matters in the First Place
Raw mushrooms have tough cell walls made of chitin. This is the same structural material found in the shells of crustaceans, and it is extremely resistant to human digestion. When you eat a raw mushroom or swallow a capsule of ground mushroom powder, your body struggles to break through that chitin barrier.
The beneficial compounds locked inside remain largely inaccessible. Extraction is the process of breaking down those cell walls so the bioactive compounds can be released
and absorbed. Without proper extraction, a mushroom supplement may look impressive on the label but deliver very little to the body. It is the difference between holding a locked treasure chest and actually opening it.
Hot Water Extraction and What It Captures
Fruiting Body vs Mycelium on Grain
Extraction method is only one part of the equation. The starting material matters just as much. And this is where another industry shortcut comes into play.
Many mushroom supplements, particularly those produced in the United States, use mycelium grown on grain rather than the actual fruiting body of the mushroom. Mycelium is the root-like network that grows through a substrate before the mushroom fruit appears above the surface. When mycelium is grown on grain (typically rice or oats), it becomes extremely difficult to separate the mycelium from the grain it has colonised. The result is a product that may contain a significant proportion of starch filler rather than concentrated mushroom compounds.
The fruiting body is the part of the mushroom that grows above the substrate. It is the recognisable cap and stem structure. Research consistently shows that fruiting bodies contain higher concentrations of beta-glucans, triterpenes, and other bioactive compounds compared to mycelium on grain. When you combine full fruiting body material with dual extraction, you start with a richer source and you extract it more completely.
How to Spot Whether a Brand Uses Dual Extraction
The mushroom supplement market is crowded, and not every brand is transparent about its methods. Here are the things to look for when evaluating a product.
-
Extraction method stated clearly. Look for the words "dual extraction", "double extraction", or "hot water and alcohol extraction" on the label or product page. If the brand does not mention extraction at all, the product may simply be ground mushroom powder with no extraction performed.
-
Fruiting body specified. The label should state "fruiting body" or "fruiting body extract". If it says "mycelium" or "myceliated grain" or "full spectrum mycelial biomass", the product uses mycelium grown on grain.
-
Beta-glucan content listed. Brands that invest in quality extraction will typically test and publish the beta-glucan percentage. A figure above 20% is a good indicator of a properly extracted product.
-
No excessive filler. Check for starch content. A high starch percentage can indicate mycelium on grain products where the grain has not been separated from the mycelium.
How Feel Supreme Approaches Mushroom Extraction
Every liquid tincture in the Feel Supreme mushroom range uses dual extraction from full fruiting bodies. This includes Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga, Tremella, Agaricus Blazei, and Maitake.
The capsule products, including Cordyceps Capsules and the Mushroom Blend, are also dual extracted. Where possible, the mushrooms are wood grown to replicate their natural growing conditions, and extraction is carried out in the UK.
This is not the cheapest way to produce a mushroom supplement. Dual extraction takes longer, requires more equipment, and demands higher quality starting material. But it is the only way to deliver a product that captures the full spectrum of compounds the mushroom has to offer.
